Oldbury UK reveals step change in its defence and security business

Oldbury UK significantly scales up its presence at DVD, to launch a number of new products and demonstrate the developing scope and diversity of its defence, homeland security and specialist applications business. Indicative of these developments is a concurrent announcement from the company that it is to establish a Power and Operational Support Division, based at its Wolverhampton headquarters. In addition to the design, manufacture, integration and supply of specialist and ancillary equipment, the company has set up a CONDO training programme to develop its capability to support its growing customer base in theatre.

All new Oldbury trailer-based systems include a Mobile Scene Management Barrier and the company also launches a new range of enclosed generator packages, designed for hostile climatic conditions and theatre environments. Other in-theatre support products being introduced include high performance air-conditioning units, solar shields, environmental protection systems and a range of high free volume filtration packages. Also on show is a special lightweight variant of Oldbury’s already highly successful Multi-Role (MR) trailer series, fully integrated to support the EADS Astrium SkyNet 5 programme.

Oldbury UK Managing Director, Richard Skan says, “We remain at the forefront of specialist trailer and platform-based mobility solutions for a number of industries, not least the defence and homeland security sector. However, we have a highly skilled and experienced design and engineering capability, which, largely at the behest of our end-user, Prime, Tier 1 and 2 customers, has grown naturally into full programme management and project integration. That process has also highlighted a number of challenging operational requirements in need of engineered solutions – and we have already demonstrated how well, able and equipped we are to respond to those”.

Oldbury Mobile Scene Management Barrier spearheads new range

Forming a backdrop to the Oldbury stand is its recently developed trailer mounted Mobile Scene Management Barrier. It is part of a range of fully mobile systems for the defence, civil emergency and homeland security market. The systems are designed to meet rapid response and deployment requirements including scene, incident and crowd management, personnel decontamination, vehicle and equipment cleansing and other operational support roles.

The new Oldbury Mobile Scene Management Barrier is designed primarily for crowd and riot control – and scene and incident management applications such as CBRN, security cordons and temporary closures. The width-adjustable, fold out configuration is fully deployable in around four minutes and several units can be coupled together in series. The solid barrier skin includes an access door, viewing windows and flap-over, anti-scaling overhangs. The design also incorporates a number of patented features.

The entry level variant is based on a braked, lightweight single-axle, rubber suspended trailer for ease of handling and manoeuvrability – and for towing behind a normal light commercial vehicle or 4x4. However, the design can be scaled and progressively up-armoured to provide ballistic or blast protection. Run flat tyres are fitted as standard.

Oldbury packs powerful punch with new generator sets

Revealed publicly for the first time are examples of Oldbury’s new range of self-contained generator packages. The compact, low weight and enclosed units can be mounted either on specially configured Oldbury braked and un-braked trailers – or integrated as part of a larger platform based system. The units are designed to provide reliable, low maintenance power supplies, particularly in hostile environments – and offer an operating range from –32ºC to +60ºC. Output capacity ranges from 5 to 22 kVA at 24-volts, with voltage regulation within + or - 0.5%. Higher output generator sets are also to be available.

All units are built into an acoustic enclosure for quiet running and engines are designed to operate at 1500rpm on diesel, plus the normal range of battlefield fuel equivalents. A number of options are also available – including sand and dust filters. All controls are protected within a sealed section of the enclosure. A further option is a service interval extension pack, which takes the operating range out to 2000 hours between scheduled maintenance.

Oldbury climate control systems … efficient, effective, easily installable

Oldbury’s newly introduced range of climate control and air-conditioning systems has been designed for direct or independent mounting on cabins or containers. The ‘pop-out’ units can be installed either direct into a panel or within a window aperture. The systems are thermostatically controlled and offer a cooling range up to 8kW and heating range up to 4kW. Operating range is from –32ºC to + 60ºC and special attention has been given to minimising noise and weight. A range of options is available including sand and dust filters and a hot gas bypass. Oldbury has supplied a number of units for deployment already, most of which are in service in hostile theatre environments such as Operation Herrick.

Add-ons include solar shields and environmental protection shelters

To meet the increasing requirements of in-service equipment being required to operate effectively in theatre environments for which it was not originally fully designed or equipped, Oldbury has introduced a range of environmental protection systems, which can be retrofitted and deployed with the minimum of interference or modification to the base equipment.

Oldbury solar shields – which deploy effectively as foldout canopies and covers – significantly mitigate the build up of heat, especially when powered stationary equipment is operating in high temperatures. Shields can be fabricated and configured to suit specific requirements – and retained by a variety of securing arrangements.

The requirement to operate sensitive electronic equipment in a clean and enclosed environment poses a particular challenge in dusty conditions. Oldbury has responded to this problem with the introduction of a range of fabric shelters, which effectively enclose the entrance area of for instance, a command and control vehicle. The shelters are lightweight and readily portable – and can be configured to fit closely around the vehicle or equipment which they are required to protect. The units can be operated in conjunction with positive airflow, effectively isolating the entrance area of the host unit from the environment outside.

Oldbury takes a fresh approach to high performance filtration

To complement Oldbury’s power, climate and environmental systems, the company has developed a range of high performance mesh filtration systems. A key feature of the design is to achieve high free volume movement with low pressure drop – even at high solids loadings. The systems are also scaleable and readily adaptable for size and fit – overcoming a number of potential installation problems where space is at a premium.

The core element of the filters utilises a flattened tube of knitted wire - which forms a continuous strip of double layer mesh. The mesh is manufactured in a variety of stitch patterns to suit the required application. Oldbury has introduced both medium and fine filtration options – which have been tested to 98% and 96% free volume air efficiency respectively. Stainless steel material is used to overcome potential issues with corrosion or solvent attack and a high specific surface area ensures excellent capacity for dust retension.

Oldbury integrates MR (Multi-Role) trailers and mobility solutions

Oldbury’s MR (Multi-Role) range of lightweight twin-axle trailers is already well established in military service. There are three standard models – at 2500kg GTW (MR25), 3000kg GTW (MR30) and 3500kg GTW (MR35), plus a range of options and platform configurations to suit specific requirements. All use Oldbury’s patented design two-axle long-travel, variable rate independent suspension, providing exceptional performance off-road - and maintaining both stability and platform equilibrium in the most arduous conditions. Running gear options include standard wheels and tyres, run-flats, high floatation tyres and skis.

The Oldbury MR trailer variant on display at DVD is part of a major order to support the SkyNet 5 programme and carries the EADS Astrium ground station. The trailer, which incorporates advanced high yield aluminium and composite materials, is a lightweight, short platform variant of the MR35, specially developed by Oldbury to reduce overall weight and provide additional payload. The company also undertook the integration of equipment and services on both the trailer and prime mover – achieving an overall space-efficient envelope, which is fully air-portable within C130 Short.

In addition to its successful MR series trailers, Oldbury designs and manufactures a wide range of special purpose trailers for defence and industrial applications. These include sliding bed units - in service with UK MoD, sat-comms dish and ground station carriers and combat support boat trailers.

Oldbury also manufactures low platform height, Ackerman-steered drawbar units – its Tactical Air Navigation package, for instance, is in use with a number of air forces worldwide. It has designed bespoke wide track ‘carrier cradle’ trailers for the latest big-fan aero engines and its mobile fully integrated jet engine wash design incorporates waste water capture and recycling. The company supplies the waste management and recycling sector with specialist handling and demountable solutions for maximum weight and high density loads and the company is the sole agent in the UK and Ireland for ARB step-frame and extendable plant and machinery trailers, ‘beaver tails’ and low loaders.
